Summarise a long case file and invalidate outdated summaries

A case-file summary may remain visible after its source has changed or become unavailable. A local summary records the document, version, and supporting text span for every claim.

Parcours pédagogique : comprendre le cas, construire, mesurer puis vérifier.

A case-file summary often remains displayed even after its source has changed or is no longer accessible. Summarising the entire file again consumes computation; blindly reusing old summaries can preserve outdated claims.

A local summary exposes the document, version, and supporting text span for every claim. A dependency graph shows what is recomputed after an update; an outdated summary is declared unavailable instead of being presented as current.

The tutorial journey, from the concrete case to verification.

Controlled corpus and what summarisation means here

Thirty case files contain twelve documents each: 360 initial documents, with four facts per document. Ten case files are used for development and twenty for testing. The English texts are original and fictional, with regular wording, negated past dates, and hostile instructions archived in quotation marks. Each document has two retained versions, giving 720 texts; retaining future versions in the simulator does not permit providing them to the model before they become active in the snapshot.

Facts concern a product, a delivery/status/quantity/site field, and a value. The LLM generates structured subject/field/value/evidence claims whose display is deterministic. This practical exercise therefore does not measure entailment in free-form paragraphs or general natural-language summarisation. That limitation makes it possible to distinguish precisely between a valid citation, a current fact, and support in the cited passage.

A leaf processes a complete document without normalising its text. Offsets are Python character indices in the exact version, not positions in rewritten text or UTF-8 byte offsets. Each non-empty line provides an evidence_id and the doc_id/version/start/end/quote/text_sha256 tuple. The model selects those IDs; the program resolves their exact offsets in the supplied catalogue, without guessing a missing citation.

Model and context

Qwen2.5-1.5B-Instruct is acquired at commit 989aa7980e4cf806f80c7fef2b1adb7bc71aa306. The model and tokenizer are pinned, with Safetensors, strict loading, tied embeddings, and the output head checked. Native BF16, eager attention, one RTX 3090, and no weight updates. Generation uses the acquired chat template, greedy decoding without sampling, one beam, KV cache, and at most 384 new tokens.

The budget includes the chat template: map input is at most 2048 tokens and reduce input 3072; 384 output tokens are reserved within the native 32768-token context. Any input that is too long is rejected, with no silent truncation. A complete case-file corpus exceeds the budget of a single reduce: twelve leaves, three reductions of four leaves, then a root form an explicit tree of sixteen nodes. Parents take their children in the stable order of their keys.

Documents remain untrusted content. No URL, command, or tool is executed from the response. The model has neither an action function nor network access; citations of hostile instructions are simply characters in the recorded inputs and outputs.

Parsing and citation limits

The schema accepts only claims and the four declared fields for each claim. There may be at most four claims and four unique references per claim; no extra or duplicate keys, and no non-finite values. Only two local corrections may occur: removing outer whitespace and removing one complete json code-block fence. No comma, value, reference, or claim is repaired. Output ending with length is INVALID even if a prefix appears to be complete JSON.

A leaf may cite its source lines; a reduction may cite only evidence referenced by its children. Offsets, quote, version, hash, and eligibility are rechecked against the current snapshot. This structural validity does not prove that subject/field/value is supported: "23 October" may cite a real passage saying "18 October". A test makes that distinction concrete.

An invalid generation is retained in full, with diagnostics and zero usable claims. A valid reduction produced from invalid children is marked PARTIAL. The baseline is not substituted for the model, and an old output is not rewritten as a new generation. Statuses, calls, and tokens remain visible even when quality is poor.

Baseline and recall ceiling

The baseline extracts every line matching the explicit Product/subject/field/value grammar. It does not read the gold data and retains their sources. It can therefore represent the 48 initial facts in a case file. The LLM summary is limited to four claims per node: at the root, its maximum initial recall is 4/48, or 8.33%. This asymmetry is disclosed; the comparison also considers compactness, faithfulness, and cache behaviour, without requiring better LLM quality.

The regular grammar and labelled facts are strong signals. Gold data is reserved for evaluation; it selects neither sentences nor references during inference. INVALID outputs do not become perfectly precise: ratios with no claims are null, while recall remains zero.

Cache keys and current state

A leaf key contains the text reference/version/hash, active/eligible/access_revision, principal, model/tokenizer, transformation implementation, map prompt, generation, chunking, and input budget. A reduction adds sorted child keys, its own prompt, and access fingerprints for descendant sources. Changing the reduce prompt therefore does not affect a leaf whose map prompt and sources are identical.

DAG edges are recorded. Before rebuilding, expected keys are recalculated: affected leaves and ancestors become outdated. serve recalculates the root key from the requested snapshot and rejects the old result as STALE before reading its claims. Old keys and generations remain on disk as history; renaming does not make them current.

A withdrawal or revocation replaces the active leaf with an empty INELIGIBLE result, without sending its old content to the model. This leaf counts as a recomputed node but not as a generation call. Unchanged leaves and reductions may be reused; their references are still checked. The counters therefore distinguish recomputed nodes, model calls, cache hits, and new tokens.

Permissions are controlled scenario data, not real authentication. The example shows the eligibility mechanism; a production engine must apply deterministic controls independently of the LLM.

Mutations and genuinely independent rebuilding

For each of the twenty test case files: version 2 of document 0 with a changed date, withdrawal of document 4, and access revocation for document 8. The 60 events are distinct from the 360 initial documents. After each event, an incremental run reuses only eligible results, while a full run regenerates every active node without cache. The full run neither reads nor copies incremental generations.

Keys, statuses, claims, and generated tokens are compared node by node, using the same snapshot and parameters. Any decoding differences are published and never erased by forcing equality. Durations are measured separately; full calls are not an estimate. Outputs from every call contain messages, token IDs, stop reason, duration, and observed GPU allocation.

Faithfulness audit

Reference validity counts claims for which all citations are current and eligible. Support is assessed separately by exact tuple agreement with an affirmative fact in a cited quote. Fact precision and recall use unique tuples and the gold data from currently eligible sources; duplicates are counted too. A historical or negated citation does not become affirmative evidence merely because words are present.

This coded check concerns the controlled schema, not human review or general language understanding. A preselected sample—the first test case file, initially and after its three mutations, with all of its root claims—is exported for an explicitly identified review by the executing assistant. Its status remains PENDING until it is actually read. No learner study or human review is claimed.

Exercise S-037

Change the date in document 11, located in the third group: one leaf and two ancestors must change. Then change only the reduce prompt: the three reductions and the root must be recomputed, while all twelve leaves remain reusable. Both operations are compared with new full runs. The old summary is explicitly rejected before rebuilding, and the main test report remains unchanged by hash.

Step 01 — Split while preserving the text and its versions

Offsets, hashes, and token budget

Error: Normalisation changes offsets

Correction: Keep a versioned canonical text layer and its correspondence table.

Qwen model card at the acquired commit for the model and its dialogue format. PROV-O for the concepts of entity, activity, and derivation; the educational JSON DAG does not claim an RDF implementation compliant with that ontology.

All 17 tests pass. The independent check recalculates dependency keys, versions, permissions, citations, comparisons, and metrics; 1,559 real generations from the main and exercise runs are audited. The environment check and mechanism demonstration make their own additional calls. The 62 incremental/full comparisons, including two in the exercise, have the same statuses and claims. The ZIP must still repeat these calculations from a clean extraction; these figures are development observations.

Across the 60 test mutations, the incremental run uses 140 model calls and 29,689 new tokens, compared with 900 calls and 104,024 tokens for full recomputation. The cumulative durations of these rebuilds are 1,118.18 and 4,021.82 seconds respectively. They do not represent the total duration of the practical exercise and do not demonstrate the same speed ratio on other machines.

Both modes also recover the same errors. For the 60 post-mutation states: four roots are VALID, 30 PARTIAL, and 26 INVALID. Of the 132 claims produced, every reference is intact, but only 63 claims are supported by their citation and 69 are not. VALID status describes structural checks; it is not a guarantee of truth. There are 65 correct predicted unique facts out of 127, for 2,640 expected facts: factual precision is 0.5118 and recall 0.02462. Counting correct facts does not replace checking support through the associated citation.

Initially, the 20 test case files produce 14 partial roots and six invalid roots; factual recall is 20/960=0.02083. The root is limited to four claims for 48 facts, giving a recall ceiling of 4/48=0.08333 even before errors. Extracting FACT lines retains the 960 initial facts and the 2,640 mutation facts without error in this regular corpus. The output budgets are therefore not equal.

In this case, we would choose structured extraction if the goal is to return all of these facts: it covers the corpus and avoids the observed generator errors. The incremental DAG teaches cache validity, invalidation, and refusal to serve stale state; its recomputation savings do not make the summary reliable. We would reassess generation for less structured texts and an explicit need for condensation, with a business evaluation of the content and a rejection policy.

The executing assistant did actually reread the first test case file, S-010, its initial state and its three mutations, with all root claims and their corresponding citations. This sample is fixed before the results: six claims are supported and two are unsupported or contradicted; two invalid roots serve no claims. One citation mentions an archived instruction without a delivery fact; another states 23 October while the claim says the 12th. No archived instruction was executed. This is neither a human review nor semantic validation of every free-form text.

The computed JSON deliberately records an external review as PENDING/NOT_YET_PERFORMED: the program cannot certify that a person or assistant read its outputs. They remain unchanged. The effective review described here is recorded separately and linked by SHA-256 to the computed sample.

Development observations

Values recalculated from the raw outputs of this run. They are not improvement thresholds; the workflow from the ZIP recalculates them over the same populations.
